MCNEVINS TAMWORTH MOTEL - Destination information

Each January, thousands of visitors descend on Tamworth for its Country Music Festival, and many of the city’s attractions relate to its standing as a centre for country music. The 12-m guitar at the door makes it hard to miss the Big Golden Guitar Tourist Centre, beside the highway on the southern approach; displays within include wax figures of country music legends; you will find more exhibits and memorabilia at the Walk a Country Mile Interactive Centre (Crn Murray and Peel St). Free Displays include the Hands of Fame (Crn Bridge St and Kable Ave), where you can see the handprints of country music stars set in concrete and bronze plaques listing the Australian Country Music Roll of Renown.

But there is more to Tamworth – you’ll also find impressive gardens, historic building, a major regional art gallery and plenty of arts and crafts. Bicentennial Park Tamworth (Kable Ave.) offers parkland walks, sculptures, fountains and picnic facilities. The plants and pathways of the Tamworth Regional Botanic Gardens (Piper St.) border Endeavour Drive Marsupial Park (top of Brisbane St.), a sanctuary for Kangaroos, with picnic facilities. In 1888 Tamworth became the first Australian City to install electric street lighting, an occasion commemorated at the Powerstation Museum (216 Peel St.). Oxley Scenic Lookout (White St.) is the best place for views of the city and the Peel River valley.
